About Us / Profile  - Wingate Elementary School is a Preschool - 8th grade Day and Boarding School located adjacent to Interstate Highway I-40 in Ft. Wingate, New Mexico.  The school is 10 miles east of Gallup, New Mexico and 120  miles west of Albuquerque, New Mexico.  We recently moved into our new school for our 700 Native American students and 200 staff. Wingate Elementary School staff strive to provide “Success For All” our students. We create opportunies for success for all our students. Our mission is to empower each student to learn and excel in a safe and supportive environment in an ever-changing world. Our Philosophy is based on the belief that American Indian Children are in the process of becoming productive, self-sufficient, and responsible citizens who have cultural, physical, social, spiritual, and educational needs that must be met to insure success.  Parents and community are always welcome and are invited to attend our monthly Parent Advisory Council meeting.
Our school is located on a historical site dating back to 1846 and our educational institution began in 1926 with the Charles H. Burke School, founded by the Office of Indian Affairs / Fort Wingate Vocational High School. We have many educational programs and activities for our students. Most of our students reside in the school dormitories and some are day students. Our academic, athletic, cultural, club, health, food service, recreational and fellowship programs are conducted for our day and dorm students 7 days a week and we have staff on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide for a safe and supportive environment.
